SYNOPSIS
Freshly unemployed, young cellist Daigo (Masahiro Motoki) has an epiphany in which he realizes he's been heading down the wrong career path. Retreating to his hometown, he trains for a new professional role as a nakanshi, or one who prepares the dead for burial. Tsutomu Yamazaki provides comic relief as Daigo's eccentric mentor in director Yojiro Takita's Oscar-winning, richly detailed -- if unlikely -- drama about finding your bliss

Some reviewer comments:

"one of those rare films that just about everyone who views it will love"

"An excellent movie, which definitely deserved its Oscar award for Best Foreign Film"

"...definitely the best foreign language film of the year. It is the most touching film I have seen in years."

"A beautiful and full of sentiments story about life and death"

    •  Loved the movie. It was like experiencing a collective meditation on the journey of the soul.
    •  A deep movie that covers several dark topics in life, with quite a bit of humor thrown in. One of the best foreign films I've seen in a while!
    •  A wonderful movie.....indeed an unexpected pleasure!
    •  Excellent movie. The best so far!
    •  Beautiful movie. Glad it's my first Japanese movie
    •  An extraordinary film experience! I left exhausted from the emotional involvement. "Departures" will now enter my pantheon of one of the best ten films I have ever seen in my life. I thank Nestor for finding it and programming it for the group. It is a real WOW!
    •  This was a beautiful film, I really enjoyed it!
    •  Thanks for organizing. Also the comments were accurate and showed enthusiasm about life
    •  moving and unique....

A simply beautiful movie addressing a topic so rarely discussed.
    •  The movie touched some real emotions. It needed better editing, because it is longer than it needs to be. It seemed implausible in some respects, but not so much so that you couldn't grant it the benefit of the doubt.
    •  It was a beautiful movie and especially meaningful for me because I have had a recent death in my family. This movie was very moving in it's portrayal of respect for the deceased. I am grateful that I watched it because it made me feel more at peace with death and afterlife.
    •  Excellent movie and great music
